SSC CGL Series Completion Questions, Tricks & Patterns
Prepare Series Completion for SSC CGL with formulas, short tricks, solved examples, practice questions, PYQs, and free PDF notes for faster exam preparation.
Series Completion is one of the highest-weightage topics in SSC CGL Verbal Reasoning. You will be presented with a sequence of numbers, alphabets, or a mix of both, and you must identify the hidden mathematical or logical pattern to find the missing term.
Learning path
- Number Series (Differences & Products)
- Alphabet Series (Shifts & Cycles)
- Mixed / Alphanumeric Series
- 20 Exam-Pattern Questions
1. Number Series Patterns
Number series require you to calculate the gaps between consecutive numbers. If the gap is small, it's addition/subtraction. If the gap grows exponentially, it's multiplication/squares.
Difference Series
- Check gap between numbers:
5, 8, 11, 14, ? (+3 gap) → 17 - Double Difference: If the first gap has no obvious pattern, check the gap of the gaps.
Product Series
- Rapid growth implies multiplication.
- Example: 2, 6, 18, 54, ? (\( \times 3 \)) → 162
- Or Mixed: \( \times 2 + 1 \), \( \times 3 + 2 \)
2. Alphabet & Alphanumeric Series
Alphabet series rely on the positions of letters (A=1, B=2 ... Z=26). Alphanumeric series combine a letter shift pattern with a number pattern.
Continuous Letter Shift
Example: A, D, G, J, ? (Pattern is +3: A+3=D, D+3=G...). Next is J+3 = M.
Alphanumeric (Mixed)
Treat the letters and numbers as separate series. Example: A1, C4, E9, G16, ?
Letters: A, C, E, G (+2) → I.
Numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16 (Squares) → 25. Answer: I25.

Giving up on Differences
If the first line of differences doesn't make sense, always try a "Double Difference" (the difference of the differences) before guessing.
Counting Letters Manually
Never count letters on your fingers. Memorize the numerical value of alphabets (A=1, M=13, Z=26) and perform simple addition/subtraction.
