Prepositions - Master Guide with Fixed Prepositions & Rules

Prepositions form the backbone of the English section in SSC CGL, making up a significant portion of questions in Fill in the Blanks, Error Spotting, and Cloze Tests. While basic prepositions are straightforward, the CGL syllabus heavily tests highly specific Fixed Prepositions and tricky distinction rules.

Learning path

  • Confusing Prepositional Pairs (e.g., Beside vs. Besides)
  • High-frequency Fixed Preposition Structures
  • Omission of Prepositions (Transitive Verbs)
  • 20 Solved Practice Questions

1. Tricky Confusing Pairs

Learn to distinguish between closely related prepositions to avoid direct negative marking traps:

Beside vs. Besides

Beside: By the side of / next to.

"He came and sat beside me."

Besides: In addition to / apart from.

"Besides English, he knows German."

Between vs. Among / Amongst

Between: Used for two people/things (or more in case of direct mutual relationships/agreements).

"An agreement was signed between the three nations."

Among/Amongst: Used for more than two. Use amongst before vowel sounds.

"Distribute the sweets amongst us."

2. Fixed Prepositions & Verb Traps

These fixed preposition rules represent 80% of CGL prepositions questions:

1

Fixed Combinations: Some words only accept a specific preposition:
Abstain / Refrain / Prohibit + from
Accused + of (never 'with' or 'for')
Cope + with (never use 'cope up with')
Congratulate + on (never 'for')
Prefer / Senior / Junior / Prior + to (never 'than')

2

No Preposition with Transitive Verbs: Active-voice sentences containing transitive verbs like discuss, describe, order, request, enter, reach, emphasize take a direct object with NO preposition.
• Incorrect: "He ordered for a cup of tea." → Correct: "He ordered a cup of tea."
• Incorrect: "We discussed about the matter." → Correct: "We discussed the matter."

!

Cope Up With Illusion

Candidates often write or speak 'cope up with'. SSC CGL consistently tests this mistake. Remember, the correct phrase is strictly cope with.

!

Transitive Verb Preposition Trap

Never add prepositions like about, for, into after verbs like discuss, order, enter unless the usage is passive or non-physical (e.g. entering into an agreement).
