What is RBI Grade B?

RBI Grade B is the direct recruitment examination for Officers in Grade B at the Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank and banking regulator. Unlike commercial bank officers, an RBI Grade B officer works on monetary policy, banking supervision, currency management, financial regulation, foreign exchange management and payment systems.

Recruitment runs in three streams — General, Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR), and Department of Statistics and Information Management (DSIM). The General stream is the largest and most competitive. Selection involves a Phase I objective screening test, a three-paper Phase II that includes two descriptive papers, and an interview.

Full Form of RBI Grade B

RBI Grade B refers to Officers in Grade B (Direct Recruit) at the Reserve Bank of India. "Direct Recruit" distinguishes these officers from those promoted internally from Grade A, and Grade B is the entry-level officer grade for external candidates.

How to Prepare for RBI Grade B 2026

The decisive RBI Grade B strategy is to build genuine analytical depth in ESI and Finance & Management rather than exam-style recall, because Phase II is largely descriptive and Phase I marks do not count towards the final merit.

Treat Phase II as the real exam

Phase I is only a screening stage — its marks do not count. Two of the three Phase II papers are substantially descriptive, and the final merit comes from Phase II plus the interview alone.

Read the Economic Survey and RBI publications

ESI and F&M are drawn from the same material RBI itself publishes — the Economic Survey, Monetary Policy Reports, Financial Stability Report and RBI Annual Report. These are the primary sources, not coaching notes.

Practise writing, not just reading

Paper II is fully descriptive and Papers I and III are half descriptive. Write timed answers and essays on economic and policy topics weekly — analytical writing is a distinct skill from objective preparation.

Build General Awareness for an 80-mark section

Phase I weights General Awareness at 80 of 200 marks, far more than commercial banking exams. It also skews towards banking, economy and RBI policy rather than general current affairs.

Check the 60% degree requirement early

The General stream requires a minimum of 60% in graduation, relaxed to 50% for SC, ST and PwBD. This is a hard eligibility bar that many candidates discover too late — confirm your marks before investing.

Prepare for a policy-oriented interview

The 75-mark interview probes awareness of economic and financial developments, not general personality questions. Be ready to discuss monetary policy, regulation and recent RBI decisions substantively.
