What is RRB ALP?

RRB ALP recruitment fills Assistant Loco Pilot posts in Indian Railways — the technical crew who assist the Loco Pilot in operating locomotives, monitor signals and instrumentation, and carry out running maintenance. It is the entry point into the running cadre, which leads through Loco Pilot Goods and Loco Pilot Passenger to Loco Pilot Mail/Express.

The recruitment is technical: candidates need an ITI certificate in a relevant trade, or a diploma or degree in engineering. Selection runs through CBT 1, a two-part CBT 2 whose Part B tests trade knowledge, a Computer Based Aptitude Test, document verification and a medical examination with the strictest vision standard in the railways.

Full Form of RRB ALP

The full form of RRB ALP is Railway Recruitment Board Assistant Loco Pilot. The Assistant Loco Pilot works alongside the Loco Pilot in the locomotive cab and progresses through the running cadre by seniority and departmental examination.

RRB ALP 2026 Exam Pattern

RRB ALP runs in three computer-based stages — CBT 1 with 75 questions in 60 minutes as a screening test, CBT 2 with a 100-question Part A that determines merit and a qualifying 75-question trade-specific Part B, and a Computer Based Aptitude Test requiring at least 42 marks in each battery.

CBT 1 — First Stage Computer Based Test

CBT 1 has 75 questions worth 75 marks in 60 minutes, with one-third of a mark deducted per wrong answer. It is a screening stage only and its marks do not carry into the final merit.

How to Prepare for RRB ALP 2026

The decisive RRB ALP strategy is to confirm you meet the A-1 vision standard before investing months of preparation, then to build Basic Science and Engineering depth for CBT 2 Part A while preparing separately for the CBAT.

Check your vision against the A-1 standard first

ALP requires 6/6 vision in both eyes without glasses, with no colour blindness. This cannot be waived at any stage. Get an eye test before you commit months of preparation — this eliminates candidates at the very last step.

Build Basic Science and Engineering depth

At 40 of 100 marks, this is the heaviest section in the merit-determining CBT 2 Part A. It covers engineering drawing, units, work and power, heat, basic electricity and simple machines — distinct from general science.

Prepare specifically for the CBAT

The aptitude test requires 42 marks in every single battery with no category relaxation, and carries 30% of the final merit. It tests perceptual speed and concentration, which improve with specific practice rather than general study.

Do not neglect Part B

Part B is purely qualifying at 35%, but failing it ends your candidature regardless of Part A performance. Revise your ITI trade syllabus from the DGT curriculum rather than general engineering material.

Remember the CBAT is English and Hindi only

You may take the CBTs in a regional language, but the aptitude test is conducted only in English and Hindi. If neither is comfortable, build familiarity well in advance.

Focus effort on CBT 2, not CBT 1

CBT 1 only screens — its marks do not carry into the merit. Clear it comfortably, then build your real preparation depth around the CBT 2 Part A syllabus, which decides selection.
