What is SSC GD Constable?

SSC GD Constable is a national-level recruitment examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to fill Constable (General Duty) posts in the Central Armed Police Forces — BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP and SSB — along with Rifleman (General Duty) in Assam Rifles, Constable in the Special Security Force, and Sepoy in the Narcotics Control Bureau.

It is the single largest recruitment the Commission runs. Recent cycles have carried well over 39,000 vacancies, and because the minimum qualification is only Class 10, it attracts several million applications. Selection involves a computer-based test followed by physical efficiency and standard tests and a detailed medical examination.

Full Form of SSC GD Constable

The full form of SSC GD is Staff Selection Commission General Duty Constable. "General Duty" distinguishes these posts from technical and tradesman roles in the same forces, which are recruited separately.

How to Prepare for SSC GD Constable 2026

The most effective SSC GD strategy is to treat the physical test as seriously as the written paper from day one, because the CBT is set at Class 10 level and most eliminations happen at the PET and PST stage.

Begin running training immediately

Men must run 5 km in 24 minutes and women 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds. This is not something to start after the CBT result — build endurance over months, not weeks, and train on similar terrain.

Check your physical standards early

Measure your height and chest against the prescribed standards before you apply, and confirm whether you qualify for the relaxed standards available to Scheduled Tribes and to candidates from hill and North-Eastern regions.

Prioritise General Knowledge and Reasoning

GK and Reasoning together carry 80 of the 160 marks and are the fastest sections to answer. Reasoning in particular is highly scoring at this difficulty level with regular practice.

Attempt the paper in your strongest language

The CBT is offered in 13 regional languages besides English and Hindi. Choosing the language you read fastest is a genuine advantage in a 60-minute paper — do not default to English out of habit.

Respect the 0.25 negative marking

With only 80 questions, careless guessing costs more than it gains. Attempt what you know confidently, make educated guesses only when you can eliminate two options, and leave the rest.

Practise full mocks in 60 minutes

The constraint in this paper is time, not difficulty. Weekly full-length mocks under strict timing build the pace needed to attempt all 80 questions, then analyse every mistake before the next attempt.
