XAT is the national management entrance examination conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur, one of India’s oldest and most respected business schools. It is the admission route to XLRI’s own programmes and is accepted by more than 250 other institutions including XIMB Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, TAPMI Manipal, Great Lakes and the wider Xavier Association of Management Institutes.

What sets XAT apart is its Decision Making section, which appears in no other Indian management entrance. It presents ethical and managerial dilemmas as short cases and asks the candidate to choose the most appropriate course of action — testing judgement rather than calculation or comprehension.

XAT is sought after because it is the sole route to XLRI Jamshedpur, whose Human Resource Management programme is widely regarded as the best in India, and because its Decision Making section rewards a different aptitude from CAT.

XLRI’s HRM programme has no real equivalent in Indian management education, and the institute’s Business Management programme places comparably with the older IIMs. For candidates targeting human resources specifically, XAT is effectively unavoidable.

The Decision Making section also changes who succeeds. Candidates with strong judgement and reading but moderate quantitative ability often perform better in XAT than in CAT, which makes it a genuine second opportunity rather than a repeat of the same test.

To appear for XAT 2027 a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration in any discipline from a recognised university, with no minimum percentage requirement, no age limit and no restriction on attempts.

Educational Qualification

A bachelor’s degree of at least three years’ duration or equivalent in any discipline from a recognised university or deemed university. Candidates completing their final examinations by the date specified in the bulletin may also apply.
