  • A vs An: Phonetic and Vowel Sound Rules
  • The Definite Article: Advanced Specificity & Superlatives
  • Zero Article: Crucial Omission Traps
  • 20 CGL-Pattern Solved Questions

1. Indefinite Articles: A vs An Traps

The choice between a and an is entirely governed by the initial sound of the word, not just the starting letter.

Vowel Sounds (An)

Used before words beginning with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

"He is an heir to the throne."

→ 'Heir' starts with a silent 'h' and sounds like 'air' (vowel sound).

"She joined an NGO."

→ 'NGO' starts with 'N' (sounds like 'en', starting with 'e' vowel sound).

Consonant Sounds (A)

Used before words beginning with a consonant sound.

"We had a unique opportunity."

→ 'Unique' starts with 'yoo' consonant sound (not vowel 'uh').

"He is a one-eyed man."

→ 'One' starts with the consonant sound of 'w' ('wa').

2. The Definite Article "The" & Omissions

Master these specific CGL conditions where articles must be strictly included or omitted:

1

Double Comparatives: Use 'the' before both parallel comparatives. E.g., "The higher you climb, the colder it gets."

2

Primary Purpose vs. Secondary Purpose: No article is used before school, college, church, bed, table, hospital, market, prison when visited for primary purpose. E.g., "My brother goes to hospital (as a patient)" vs "I went to the hospital to meet him (secondary purpose)."

3

Fixed Idioms: Do not add articles in phrases like at hand, in fact, by mistake, set fire to. Include indefinite articles in phrases like in a hurry, in a dilemma, make a noise, tell a lie, take a bath.

Strategy errors to avoid

!

Vowel Sound Mistake

Don't blindly write 'an' based on spelling. Check the initial sound. Words like university, unique, one-way, union take 'a'. Words like honest, honor, heir, hour, M.A., MLA, FIR take 'an'.

!

Primary Purpose Overuse

Don't omit articles before primary places when there's a specific modifier or secondary visit. "I went to school" (to study) is correct. "I went to the school to see my son's teacher" (secondary purpose) requires 'the'.
