IBPS SO is the Common Recruitment Process conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit Specialist Officers for participating public sector banks. Unlike Probationary Officers, who are generalists, Specialist Officers are recruited into a specific functional stream — Information Technology, Agriculture Field Officer, Law Officer, HR and Personnel Officer, Marketing Officer, or Rajbhasha Adhikari.

Specialist Officers join in Junior Management Grade Scale I on the same pay as a Probationary Officer, but work within their domain rather than in general branch banking. An IT Officer manages banking systems and security, an Agriculture Field Officer handles rural and agricultural credit, and a Law Officer advises on documentation, recovery and compliance.

IBPS SO is popular because it offers officer-grade banking pay to candidates with a professional or technical qualification, with far smaller competition than IBPS PO because each stream draws only candidates holding that specific degree.

The competition structure is the key attraction. Where IBPS PO is open to every graduate in the country, an Agriculture Field Officer post is open only to agriculture graduates, and a Law Officer post only to law graduates. For candidates with the right qualification, the effective competition is a fraction of the generalist route at identical pay.

The work is also domain-aligned, which suits candidates who want to use their professional training rather than move into general banking. Career progression follows the same officer grades as the generalist cadre.

IBPS SO eligibility is entirely stream-specific — each post requires a particular degree, such as a four-year engineering degree in a computer discipline for IT Officer or a bachelor’s in agriculture for Agriculture Field Officer — with an age limit of 20 to 30 years.

Educational Qualification

Stream-specific. IT Officer: a four-year engineering or technology degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, IT, Electronics, Electronics & Telecommunications, Electronics & Communication or Electronics & Instrumentation, or a post-graduate degree in these fields, or a graduate with DOEACC B level. Agriculture Field Officer: a four-year degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Dairy Science, Fishery Science, Pisciculture, Agri Marketing & Cooperation, Co-operation & Banking, Agro-Forestry, Forestry, Agricultural Biotechnology, Food Science, Agriculture Business Management, Food Technology, Dairy Technology or Agricultural Engineering. Law Officer: a bachelor’s degree in Law with enrolment as an advocate with the Bar Council. HR/Personnel Officer: a graduate with a two-year full-time post-graduate degree or diploma in Personnel Management, Industrial Relations, HR, HRD, Social Work or Labour Law. Marketing Officer: a graduate with a two-year full-time MMS or MBA in Marketing or an equivalent post-graduate qualification. Rajbhasha Adhikari: a post-graduate degree in Hindi with English at degree level, or in Sanskrit with English and Hindi at degree level.

Age Limit

Nationality

• A citizen of India, or
• A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
• A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
• A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries, Vietnam or Ethiopia with the intention of permanently settling in India.

IBPS SO runs in three stages — a 125-mark Prelims which is qualifying and comes in two variants depending on stream, a 60-mark Professional Knowledge Mains which alone determines the merit, and an interview. Final merit is Mains 80% and Interview 20%.

An IBPS Specialist Officer joins in Junior Management Grade Scale I with a basic pay of ₹48,480 following the latest wage revision — the same as a Probationary Officer — giving an approximate gross salary of ₹75,000 to ₹85,000 per month.
