What is UPSC EPFO?

UPSC EPFO is the Recruitment Test conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to appoint Enforcement Officers and Accounts Officers in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation. An Enforcement Officer inspects establishments for compliance with provident fund legislation, recovers dues and investigates defaults, while an Accounts Officer manages the accounting and financial administration of subscriber funds.

The examination shares its nine-subject syllabus and 300-mark Recruitment Test format with the Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner recruitment, but the posts sit at Pay Level 8 rather than Level 10 and carry a tighter age limit of 30 years. Many candidates prepare for and apply to both.

Full Form of UPSC EPFO

UPSC EPFO refers to the recruitment of Enforcement Officers and Accounts Officers — abbreviated EO/AO — in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, conducted by UPSC on the organisation’s behalf.

How to Prepare for UPSC EPFO 2026

The decisive UPSC EPFO strategy is to prepare for APFC and EO/AO together, since the syllabus and Recruitment Test format are identical, and to concentrate on the three specialist subjects that general studies preparation leaves untouched.

Prepare for APFC and EO/AO as one exam

The nine-subject syllabus and 300-mark Recruitment Test are identical. Preparing once qualifies you for both, and they are frequently notified together — apply to both wherever eligibility permits.

Start with labour laws and social security

Industrial Relations and Labour Laws plus Social Security in India appear in no other recruitment. Candidates arriving from Civil Services or SSC preparation have covered none of it, and this is where the paper is decided.

Read the EPF Act directly

The Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act is the statute you would enforce. Read it alongside the EPF, Pension and Deposit Linked Insurance Schemes rather than relying on condensed notes.

Do not skip accounting

General Accounting Principles is a finite, learnable syllabus, and it matters especially for Accounts Officer where the interview probes it further. Non-commerce candidates who skip it forfeit accessible marks.

Note the tighter age limit

EO/AO caps at 30 years against APFC’s 35. Candidates aged between 30 and 35 remain eligible for APFC only, so check which posts you can actually apply for before planning.

Attempt selectively under one-third negative marking

Each question carries 2.5 marks with roughly 0.83 deducted for a wrong answer. Across 120 questions that penalty compounds — attempt where you can eliminate at least two options.

UPSC EPFO 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions

UPSC EPFO 2026 dates have not been announced. UPSC conducts EPFO recruitment only when the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation reports vacancies, so cycles are irregular. Check the notice board on upsc.gov.in for the advertisement.
