Original Certificates Checked
Shortlisted candidates must present all original educational and reservation certificates during Document Verification. Mismatches or failure to present documents leads to cancellation of candidature.
Old vs New Selection Structure
This is a significant simplification from SSC CGL's older structure, which ran a four-stage process (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 descriptive paper, Tier 4 skill/document stage) before being restructured into the current two-tier format. If you're reading older prep material that references a "Tier 3" or "Tier 4," it's describing the pre-restructuring process and is out of date.

Stage 1: Tier 1 — Screening Exam
A qualifying computer-based test. Clearing it only earns the right to sit for Tier 2 — Tier 1 marks are never added to the final merit score. For the exact question count, marks, duration, and sectional timing, see SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2026.
Stage 2: Tier 2 — Merit Exam
This is the stage that actually decides your rank. Tier 2 now has up to three papers, and which ones apply to you depends on your target post:

In other words: a candidate targeting a general post is ranked on Paper I alone. A candidate targeting JSO is ranked on Paper I plus Paper II. A candidate targeting AAO is ranked on Paper I plus Paper III. This is why two candidates with an identical Paper I score can end up with very different final ranks depending on which post-specific paper they also sat for.

Stage 3: Document Verification (DV)
Candidates who clear Tier 2 are called for DV, where you present original certificates plus self-attested photocopies for verification. Typically required:

Stage 4: Physical / Medical Test — Specific Posts Only
Not every SSC CGL post requires this stage. It applies specifically to posts with field, enforcement, or investigative duties — for example, Central Excise/GST Inspector, CBI Sub-Inspector, and similar roles — where a Physical Standards Test (height, weight, chest expansion for male candidates) and a medical fitness check confirm the candidate can perform the physical demands of the job. Stage 5: Final Merit List & Post Allotment
Once Tier 2 marks, document verification, and any required physical/medical clearance are finalized, SSC prepares the final merit list — strictly by Tier 2 score for each post category. Posts are then allotted based on:
A higher merit rank gives you a realistic shot at your top preference; a lower rank within the qualifying range means you're allotted whichever preferred post still has an open vacancy at your rank. Is There an Interview in SSC CGL?
No. SSC CGL selection has never included an interview since its restructuring — final selection rests entirely on Tier 2 performance, document verification, and post-specific physical/medical clearance where applicable. If any source tells you otherwise, it's either outdated or confusing SSC CGL with a different exam.
