What is RRB Technician?

RRB Technician recruitment fills technical maintenance posts across Indian Railways in two distinct grades. Technician Grade I Signal works in the signal and telecommunication department maintaining signalling equipment, interlocking systems and telecom infrastructure. Technician Grade III covers maintenance roles across the mechanical, electrical, and signal and telecommunication departments.

The two grades have different qualifications, different age limits, different pay levels and — importantly — entirely different exam patterns under the same notification. Selection for both runs through a single computer-based test followed by document verification and a medical examination, with no second written stage.

Full Form of RRB Technician

RRB Technician refers to technical maintenance posts recruited by the Railway Recruitment Boards. "Grade I Signal" is the higher, diploma-entry post in the signal and telecommunication department; "Grade III" is the ITI-entry maintenance post across several technical departments.

How to Prepare for RRB Technician 2026

The decisive RRB Technician strategy is to prepare for the correct grade, because Grade I Signal and Grade III have entirely different section weightings — 35 marks of engineering versus 40 marks of General Science.

Confirm which grade you are eligible for first

Grade I Signal requires a diploma or degree; Grade III requires Class 10 plus ITI. The two papers share almost no weighting, so preparing for the wrong one wastes months. Decide before you begin.

Grade III: build General Science depth

General Science carries 40 of the 100 marks in Grade III — the single heaviest section in any railway Level 2 paper. NCERT Class 9 and 10 science textbooks cover it almost completely.

Grade I: master Basic Science and Engineering

Grade I weights Basic Science and Engineering at 35 marks — engineering drawing, units, work and power, heat and basic electricity. This is distinct from general science and follows the diploma curriculum.

Grade I: do not underestimate computers

Twenty marks come from Basics of Computers and Applications, unusually heavy for a railway paper. Architecture, input and output devices, MS Office, internet and security basics are finite and fully learnable.

Choose your zone and trade deliberately

Vacancies are split by zone, grade and trade. A trade with few posts in one zone may have many in another, and you may apply to only one RRB. Compare before applying.

Practise full mocks in 90 minutes

One hundred questions in 90 minutes leaves under a minute per question. Weekly full-length mocks for your specific grade build the pace, and analysing every mistake is where the marks come from.
