CAT DILR Time Management: The Percentile Is Decided by One Decision

Almost every ruined DILR section has the same shape. The candidate opens a set that looks approachable, works it for eight minutes, hits something that will not resolve, works it for seven more because they are nearly there, and finishes the section having completed one set.

The fifteen minutes did not cost them that set. It cost them the two sets they never opened — and those two sets were, on most papers, the ones they could have finished.

A set held past the point of leaving does not lose you one set. It loses you the two you never read, which is where the percentile actually went.

Nothing on this page is about solving faster. Speed is not what separates a 70 percentile DILR from a 95 percentile DILR — allocation is. What follows is a budget you decide before the section starts and two checkpoints that fire whether or not you feel ready for them. The budget is boring. That is the point — a rule you can follow while your pulse is up beats a judgement call you have to make while it is.

Where the forty minutes go

The budget below is built to finish three sets, not to touch five. That is a deliberate choice and the reasoning is in the next section.

Minutes 0–3

Scan everything. Solve nothing.

Read every set's opening lines and glance at the data. Rank them one to five. Do not start the first set because it is first — that single habit is how candidates spend their best twenty minutes on the hardest set of the paper.

Minutes 3–14

Your best-ranked set, completely

Eleven minutes is deliberately generous. A set worth attempting is worth finishing, and a set finished at minute fourteen is worth more than two sets half-built at minute thirty.

Minutes 14–25

Second-ranked set, completely

Do not go back to check set one. Verification of a set you finished confidently is the lowest-value minute available in this section.

Minutes 25–32

Third set — or close what the first two left open

Seven minutes is enough for a straightforward third set and not enough for a hard one. If both earlier sets closed cleanly, open the third. If either is sitting half-built, finish that instead.

Minutes 32–40

Return, harvest, sweep

Nothing new gets opened. Go back to whatever you left at a checkpoint, take the answers your partial structure already determines, and fill every empty typed-answer box before the clock runs out.

Why three complete beats five started

This is the part that makes the budget rational rather than merely cautious, and it rests on a feature of DILR that does not apply to the other two sections.

In VARC or QA, half the work gets you half the marks. Questions are independent there, so answering three of six is worth three. DILR questions are not independent. They hang off one shared structure, and until that structure resolves most of them cannot be answered at all — which means the last twenty per cent of the work releases roughly eighty per cent of the marks.

That drop-off is why "I attempted five sets" and "I scored on five sets" are unrelated statements. Partial credit barely exists here. The section rewards depth in a way that feels wrong to candidates trained on exams where coverage pays.

The two checkpoints

Both are measured from when you enter a set, not from the section clock. Both are pass–fail. Neither asks you to judge whether you are close, because that judgement is precisely the thing that fails under pressure.

Is anything placed on the grid yet? Nothing placed at three minutes means one of two things: you chose the wrong representation, or you misread a condition. Neither improves by continuing. Leave.
Is the structure resolving, or are you holding four live cases? Two branches at eight minutes is normal and usually closes. Four means the conditions were sequenced badly. Leave, and write one line noting where you stopped.
One constraint away from closing? Then take the extra minute. This is the only case where overrunning the budget is correct — and note that it requires a specific, nameable next step, not a feeling.

Minute three saves whole sections. It is also the checkpoint nobody sets, because three minutes feels far too early to give up on anything. But a blank page at three minutes is not bad luck — it is diagnostic information about your representation or your reading, and acting on it costs you thirty seconds against the eight further minutes you were otherwise about to spend.

Why you won't leave, and what to do about it

Every candidate knows they should abandon a set that is not working. Almost nobody does it during the exam. That gap is worth explaining rather than moralising about, because the explanation contains the fix.

The thing nobody tells you

At eight minutes inside a hard set you feel close. That feeling is produced by the effort you have already spent, and it is identical whether the set is one step from closing or genuinely unsolvable in the time you have. A signal that reads the same in both cases cannot tell them apart — which is exactly why the decision has to belong to a clock instead of to you.

There is a second reason candidates stay, and it rests on a straightforward misreading of what leaving costs.

Leaving a set throws away the work I've done on it.
The structure stays on the page. At minute 32 a part-built set is the cheapest place to spend time — the reading and framing are done, so closing it may take three minutes where a fresh set needs eleven. Leaving is deferring, not abandoning.

Internalise that and minute eight stops feeling like a loss. It becomes a queue.

The last eight minutes have their own rules

Do

  • Return to the set you left at a checkpoint
  • Take the answers your partial structure already determines
  • Enter something in every typed-answer box
  • Re-read one question stem you know you rushed

Don't

  • Open a set you have never read
  • Try to build a structure from scratch
  • Leave non-negative questions blank
  • Re-verify a set you finished confidently
Sweep for empty typed-answer boxes in the final two minutes. Non-MCQ questions in DILR carry no negative marking, so a blank is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not. This takes seconds and occasionally lands. Candidates leave marks on the table here every single year.

Three drills that build the discipline

Time management is not something you decide to have on exam morning. It is a set of reflexes, and reflexes need repetitions. Three drills, run over a fortnight, cover it.

  1. The abandon drill — 15 repetitions Twelve-minute timer, one hard set, stop dead when it sounds even if you are mid-line. This sounds trivial and is the most valuable DILR practice available, because it converts a decision made under pressure into something automatic.
  2. The scan drill — 10 repetitions Open five sets, spend three minutes ranking them without solving, then check your ranking against how long each actually took you. Ten rounds makes the three-minute scan genuinely predictive rather than a guess.
  3. The four-number log — after every sectional Minutes in each set, sets completed, sets started, and whether any set exceeded twelve minutes. Four numbers, thirty seconds. Most candidates who keep it for three weeks discover their problem was never solving speed.

The budget is deliberately not built to fit five sets in. It is built to make three complete, because a partly built structure in DILR frequently answers zero questions rather than some of them.

How long should I spend on one DILR set?

Eleven to twelve minutes, with two hard checkpoints inside that window. At three minutes, ask whether anything is placed on the grid — if not, either the representation is wrong or a condition was misread, and continuing fixes neither. At eight minutes, ask whether the structure is resolving or whether you are carrying four live cases. Past twelve minutes a set has stopped being an investment and has become the reason two other sets go unopened.

Is it better to attempt three DILR sets or five?

Three completed, for almost everyone. What if every DILR set looks hard?

The ranking still matters, because sets are never equally hard even on a brutal paper — and on such a paper every other candidate is struggling too, so the percentile bar falls with it. Pick the two least forbidding, apply the same checkpoints, and accept that two completed sets may be a strong outcome that year. What actually loses percentile on a hard paper is not attempting fewer sets; it is spending twenty minutes on one that was never going to resolve.
